MUS631   Ethnomusicology Dissertation/Folio   (60 credits)

Year Running: 2019/2020
Credit level: F7

Description

This module requires students to complete a substantive piece of independent study, culminating in either (A) original writing that may include the results of new research or (B) a folio of ethnomusicological materials. Roughly 15,000 words in length, the assessed submission must be on a topic approved by the tutor within the area of world music. It may be based on either library or fieldwork research (or a combination), and may include original field materials as appendices. Alternatively, the submitted work can take the form of a folio of fieldwork materials, editions or analyses of an equivalent substance, accompanied by a commentary. Learning is supported by original research, seminars and tutorials throughout the semester, supporting planning, researching and writing up. For either Dissertation or Folio, the writing will demonstrate an appropriate critical knowledge of the existing theoretical and methodological literature in ethnomusicology, as well as other materials from disciplines and fields pertinent to the specific topic selected.
